Patriots roll over Scorpions in season opener
The Liberty Patriots opened their 2023 season with a convincing 42-21 victory over the Desert Edge Scorpions on Friday night at Desert Edge High School.
Liberty’s offense was clicking on all cylinders, scoring on its first four possessions of the game.
The Patriots took an early 7-0 lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by junior running back Jayden Limar.
- Limar finished the game with 124 yards rushing on 15 carries.
- He also caught two passes for 37 yards.
Liberty quarterback Drew Davis threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
- He completed 18 of 25 passes.
- His favorite target was senior wide receiver Jalen Richmond, who had six catches for 123 yards.
The Patriots’ defense also played well, forcing three turnovers.
- Senior linebacker Trevor Gibbs had two interceptions.
- Junior defensive back Jake Wilson had one interception.
The Scorpions were led by junior quarterback Tyson Guzman, who threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns.
- He also rushed for 55 yards.
- His favorite target was senior wide receiver Anthony Jones, who had five catches for 102 yards.
The Scorpions scored their first touchdown of the game on a 19-yard pass from Guzman to Jones in the second quarter.
They added another touchdown in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Guzman.
But the Patriots were too much for the Scorpions to handle and pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Liberty’s victory is its first over Desert Edge since 2019.
The Patriots will look to continue their winning ways next week when they host the Centennial Bulldogs.
The Scorpions will try to rebound next week when they travel to face the Shadow Ridge Mustangs.
