Jason Holder bittersweet as Barbados-born Bethell plays for England

West Indies brace for ‘no-fear’ white-ball tour of England

Holder: ‘We have a lot of guys who are hungry to prove themselves’

West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder admits it is "bittersweet" to see Barbados-born Jacob Bethell playing for England ahead of the upcoming white-ball tour. Bethell, 22, was born in Bridgetown, but qualified to play for England through his father and made his international debut in the recent ODI series against South Africa. Holder, who is also from Barbados, said: "It's always bittersweet when you see guys who are born in the Caribbean playing for other countries. "But at the same time, we have a lot of guys who are hungry to prove themselves and show what they can do. "We have no fear going into this tour. We know it's going to be a tough challenge, but we're confident we can compete with the best." The West Indies will play three ODIs and three T20Is against England, starting on June 9. Holder is likely to play a key role in the series, having captained the West Indies to the 2016 World Twenty20 title. He is also one of the most experienced players in the squad, having played 126 ODIs and 80 T20Is. Holder has also been in good form with the bat recently, scoring two half-centuries in the recent Test series against Bangladesh. He will be looking to continue his good form in the white-ball series and help the West Indies to a famous victory over England. Despite being born in Barbados, Bethell has represented England at under-19 level and made his senior debut against South Africa in July 2022.
