'He's proved us right': Kam Waites completes depth chart ascent ahead of 2024 opener

Ohio State commit Kam Waites completes depth chart ascent at cornerback

Buckeye commit Kam Waites looking towards 2024 season

Ohio State commit Kam Waites will enter the 2024 season as the Buckeyes' starting cornerback, head coach Ryan Day announced on Monday.

"Kam has earned this opportunity with his hard work and dedication," Day said. "He's a talented player with a bright future, and we're excited to see him make an impact on the field for us."

Waites, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound cornerback from St. Louis, Missouri, was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class. He chose Ohio State over offers from Alabama, Georgia, and LSU.

Waites played in four games as a true freshman in 2023, recording three tackles. He is expected to start opposite Denzel Burke, who is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the country.

"I'm excited to get the opportunity to start for this team," Waites said. "I'm going to work hard to prove that I deserve it."

Waites is the latest in a long line of talented cornerbacks to play for Ohio State. In recent years, the Buckeyes have had All-Americans such as Jeff Okudah, Shaun Wade, and Marshon Lattimore.

Waites is expected to be a key contributor for the Buckeyes in 2024. He is a physical corner with good size and speed. He is also a good tackler. Waites will be counted on to be a lockdown corner for the Buckeyes this season.

"I think he can be a great player for us," Day said. "He's got all the tools to be a successful cornerback in this league."
