German Cabinet Condemns Iran's Execution of Jamshid Sharmahd

Iranian-German Citizen’s Execution Draws International Ire

Germany Demands Explanation; Considers Further Diplomatic Steps

The German government has strongly condemned the execution of Iranian-German citizen Jamshid Sharmahd by Iranian authorities. The cabinet met on Monday to discuss the situation and has demanded an explanation from the Iranian regime.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that the execution was "a blatant violation of international law" and that Germany would "not tolerate such barbaric acts." She added that the government would consider further diplomatic steps in response.

Sharmahd, a 67-year-old engineer, was arrested in 2020 while in transit in Dubai. He was accused of leading a terrorist group opposed to the Iranian government. He was sentenced to death in 2022 after a trial that was widely criticized as unfair. Despite international appeals for clemency, the sentence was carried out on Saturday.

The execution has sparked outrage and condemnation from around the world, including from the United States and the European Union. The German government has summoned the Iranian ambassador to express its deep displeasure.

The cabinet meeting comes amid heightened tensions between Germany and Iran. In recent weeks, Germany has imposed sanctions on Iranian officials involved in the crackdown on protesters following the death of Mahsa Amini. Iran has responded by suspending diplomatic talks with Germany.
