On Thursday evening, fire broke out in a hospital room at the Frankenberg Hospital in the German town of Frankenberg/Eder. According to police, a 74-year-old male patient died in the fire. A police spokesperson confirmed the incident to the Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA) newspaper.
The fire brigade was alerted around 8:20 p.m. and arrived at the scene with a large contingent of firefighters. As a precaution, the entire hospital had to be evacuated, and around 100 patients and staff had to be relocated to the nearby Ederberglandhalle.
Cause of the fire still unclear
The cause of the fire is still unknown. According to the HNA, the fire broke out in a patient's room on the second floor. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire quickly, but the room was completely destroyed. The patient, who was in the room at the time of the fire, died at the scene.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. The forensic department is also involved in the investigation. The exact circumstances of the incident are still unclear.
Hospital operations continue
Despite the fire, the hospital continues to operate. The patients who were evacuated have been relocated to other wards in the hospital or to other hospitals in the area. The hospital management has set up an emergency hotline for relatives of patients.
