Football: Soccer-Correa's late goal gives Atletico 1-0 win at Athletic

Atletico Madrid moved into third place in LaLiga with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday thanks to a late goal from substitute Angel Correa.

The Argentine forward struck in the 73rd minute to end Athletic's resistance and give Atletico their third straight league win.

Atletico now have 38 points from 18 games, two behind leaders Barcelona and one ahead of fourth-placed Real Sociedad.

Athletic, who had won their previous two home games, drop to eighth place with 26 points.

How the match unfolded

The first half was a cagey affair with few clear-cut chances for either side.

Atletico had the better of the possession but struggled to break down a well-organised Athletic defence.

The second half was more open and Atletico came close to scoring on several occasions before Correa finally broke the deadlock.

Correa's goal

The winning goal came after a neat passing move from Atletico.

Joao Felix played the ball into the path of Correa, who took a touch before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

It was Correa's fifth goal of the season and his third in his last four games.

Reaction

"I'm very happy with the goal and the three points," said Correa.

"It was a tough game but we showed great character to get the win."

Atletico coach Diego Simeone added: "It was a very important win for us.

"We knew it would be a difficult game but we showed great determination and desire to get the three points.

What's next?

Atletico will host Barcelona in their next league game on January 8th.

Athletic will travel to Real Betis on the same day.
